    Historically occurred on the islands of Guam, Tinian, and Saipan in the Western Pacific. At least since WWII, when U.S. Navy troops were stationed on the islands, the Mariana Mallard was hunted, and wetland destruction there further endangered the species. The mallard has been seen on Guam only once since 1946. Three were captured from the other islands in 1979 in an attempt to breed the species in captivity, but two of them died in 1981 before breeding and the other (a male) was never seen again. It is possible that the species still exists in the dense habitat of Lake Susupe on Saipan.
